CHÉNIER, André. Posthumous and unpublished poetry. - Lot 156
CHÉNIER, André. Posthumous and unpublished poetry. Paris, Charpentier - Eugène Renduel, 1833. 2 volumes, in-8, fawn half-basanes, smooth spines with gilded romantic decorations, marbled edges. LIX - 272 ; 353 pages. Upper head of first volume and lower head of second volume faded, spines rubbed, small wormholes at spine ends of first volume, very slight paper loss on covers, foxing. Partly first edition of André Chénier's works, including some fifty previously unpublished pieces. Preceded by a note on the poet's life and works by H. Latouche, recounting in particular his tragic but not without panache end on the guillotine in Thermidor de l'An II, where the poet closed the book of Sophocles that he was going through, corning the page before climbing onto the scaffold. Most of the unpublished pieces published in this edition were entrusted by the poet to Pierre Daunou. The notice written by de Latouche and containing the unpublished pieces (notably "Le Jeu de Paume") had been published as early as 1819, unleashing a controversy among critics, with a certain Béranger accusing de Latouche of having composed the new poems himself. Fine period Romantic spine bindings.
