BOILEAU DESPREAUX, Nicolas. OEuvres de Boileau avec un nouve - Lot 157
BOILEAU DESPREAUX, Nicolas. OEuvres de Boileau avec un nouveau commentaire par M. Amar. Paris, Lefèvre, 1821. 4 volumes, in-8, red half-basanes, smooth spines decorated with gilt irons and central gilt fleurons. XXXVI - 424 ; XXII - 448 ; XVI - 487 ; III - 512 pages. 1 black copper-engraved frontispiece in the first volume. 6 black engravings out of text in the second volume. Small wormholes on the spines, minor spalling to the jaws of the first and third volumes, hinge of the first volume split, foxing, some leaves browned. New edition of Nicolas Boileau's complete works, with commentary by Jean-Augustin Amar du Rivier. This edition is illustrated with a portrait-frontispiece engraved by Lignon after Rigaud and six out-of-text figures from the epic parody "Le Lutrin" engraved by Pierre Adam, Chollet, Burdet, Larcher and Lorichon after Desenne. Between the rigor and classical perfection of "L'Art poétique", the courtly but subtle humor of the "Epîtres" and the hilarious parody of "Le Lutrin" - which treats a highly trivial subject like an epic (the dispute between a treasurer and a cantor of the chapter) - this complete edition will enable the reader to discover the full extent of Boileau's genius. Period bindings in good condition.
