CELLINI, Benvenuto and LAGUILLERMIE, Frédéric-Auguste. The l - Lot 177
CELLINI, Benvenuto and LAGUILLERMIE, Frédéric-Auguste. The life of Benvenuto Cellini written by himself. Paris, A. Quantin, 1881. In-8, burgundy half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons, fillets and garlands, top edge gilt, covers preserved. 624 pages, 24 full-page black engravings including 9 etchings, including the frontispiece portrait, and numerous gold, silver and bronze chromolithography vignettes at the head and tailpieces. Binding slightly rubbed, moderate foxing and wetness. Superb French edition of this autobiography, illustrated with 9 etchings drawn and engraved by Frédéric-Auguste Laguillermie, as well as fine reproductions of the master's works. Cellini's impetuous character earned him the nickname "maledetto fiorentino" (cursed Florentine), and he aroused both admiration and animosity. In this account, written between 1558 and 1567, he recounts the most incredible episodes of his life: exile from Florence, defense of the Castel Sant'Angelo during the Sack of Rome, imprisonment, escape and murder... Fine binding and engravings, in good condition.
