FERDOWSI, Abou'lkasim Firdousi dit and SIMONIDY, Michel. His - Lot 231
FERDOWSI, Abou'lkasim Firdousi dit and SIMONIDY, Michel. Histoire de Minoutchehr selon le Livre des Rois. Paris, Édition d'art H. Piazza, 1919. Large in-8, full jansenist garnet morocco, four-ribbed spine, gilt headband, covers and spine preserved, cardboard slipcase. 184 pages; 49 color illustrations, including 1 frontispiece, 10 plates and 38 vignettes. Spine faded, a few stains to boards. Edition illustrated with 49 original color compositions by Michel Simonidy, 11 of which are full-page. Limited edition of 550 copies, this one of 450 numbered on vellum (no. 223). A true masterpiece of Persian literature, and as influential in the Arab-Muslim world as The Iliad and The Odyssey were in Europe, The Book of Kings remained relatively unknown in Europe until the end of the 17th century, when Colbert and Antoine Galland first purchased manuscripts. It wasn't until 1838 that the first volume of this epic was translated into French by Jules Mohl, a translation that is included in our edition. A very fine copy in full Jansenist morocco.
