[ARTS PREMIERS] KUPKA, Karel. Art in its raw state. Painting - Lot 364
[ARTS PREMIERS] KUPKA, Karel. Art in its raw state. Paintings and Sculptures of the Australian Aborigines. Lausanne, Clairefontaine, 1962. In-4, orange cloth publisher's boards, smooth spine, illustrated dust jacket. 192 pages, numerous black and color illustrations in and out of text, 2 fold-outs with captions and black illustrations. Faded dust jacket. Richly illustrated study of Australian Aboriginal art, presented as art "à l'état brut", in an approach that is both ethnographic and aesthetic. The text by André Breton, a major figure in Surrealism, highlights the shortcomings of the Western view of so-called "primitive" art. Preface by ethnologist Alfred Bühler. Copy in relatively good condition.
