[SCULPTURE]. Paperweight adorned with bronze figurines repre - Lot 404
[SCULPTURE]. Paperweight adorned with bronze figurines representing the miners Nappian and Neucke. Bochum, Mining Museum Bochum, 1970. 1 in-8 square (21x6x21 cm) green cardboard box containing the bronze figurine accompanied by a text from the Mining Museum Bochum dated 1970 and its French translation. Bronze darkened and slightly oxidized in places. Charming little bronze paperweight (9x7x4 cm) decorated with relief figurines, representing the Nappian and Neucke miners who, according to legend, discovered the first copper-bearing schists in Mansfeld county, not far from Heckstedt, around the year 1200. The figurines here are modeled in miniature after original sandstone sculptures from the early days of German mining (circa 11th century). The names "Nappian" and "Neucke" are engraved on the sides; the underside is lined with green felt. The Museum text states, "The hard sandstone originals depict gnome-like miners, working in a low cut with their picks, lying on their sides; these figurines come from a chapel in Welfesholz in the Mansfeld region." A beautiful and rare item featuring the legends of German mining.
