[BERGÉ]. The Library of Pierre Bergé. - Lot 448
[BERGÉ]. The Library of Pierre Bergé. Paris, Pierre Bergé et associés, Sotheby's, 2015. 2 volumes in-4, publisher's paper boards, one red and one yellow, smooth spines. N.p, approx. 1130 pages, numerous black and color hors-texte illustrations. Catalogs bringing together the 565 lots from two book auctions by the great collector Pierre Bergé, held at Drouot on December 11, 2015 and November 8 and 9, 2016. Bergé declared: "Following the example of Edmond de Goncourt, I want all my books to be scattered under the hammer of the auctioneer, and for the enjoyment that the acquisition of each of them has given me to be given back to an heir of my tastes". The first sale included 180 books, some of them very rare, such as the clandestine edition of Felicia ou Mes fredaines by the chevalier de Nerciat (1792), the only known book with a bookplate by the Marquis de Sade; Montaigne's "Essais" from 1580; the first edition of Madame Bovary (1857) by Flaubert, dedicated to Hugo; and Gustave Flaubert's manuscript of L'Education sentimentale (circa 1869), which sold for 470,000 euros. The second sale featured 376 rare books entirely devoted to 19th-century literature, divided into four chapters: the precursors, the Romantic movement in Europe, the writer Gustave Flaubert, and the "Moderns" from Baudelaire to Zola. Good condition.
