STOKVIS, Willemijn. COBRA: The Conquest of Spontaneity. - Lot 449
STOKVIS, Willemijn. COBRA: The Conquest of Spontaneity. Paris, Gallimard, 2001. In-4, black percaline, smooth spine, illustrated dust jacket. 471 pages, numerous full-page black illustrations. French edition of this study of the COBRA movement (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam), active between 1948 and 1951. Launched in the years following the Second World War by writers and artists (Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Anton Nieuwenhuys Constant, Guillaume Corneille, then Pierre Alechinsky and Pol Bury), its principle was the advent of a new society, in which entirely new art would find its place. Rejecting all forms of authority, both in society and in art, they readily drew their examples from "primitive" cultures, children's art and the art of the mentally ill. Their primary concern was to free themselves from norms, and to achieve perfectly spontaneous expression. A fine copy of this well-documented, in-depth study.
