[GASTRONOMY - RUNDELL, Maria E.]. A New System of Domestic C - Lot 3
[GASTRONOMY - RUNDELL, Maria E.]. A New System of Domestic Cookery; formed upon Principles of Economy, and Adapted to the Use of Private Families. By a Lady. A New Edition, Corrected. Second English edition of the most popular cookbook of the first half of the 19th century, published by Maria Eliza Rundell (1745-1828). London & Edinburgh, W. Wilson for John Murray, J. Harding and A. Constable & Co, 1807. In-12, brown basane racinée, smooth spine decorated with double gilt fillets, red morocco title-piece. Contemporary binding (restored). XXX, 10 ff.n.ch. (table), 352 pp. 1 frontispiece and 9 plates hors-texte. Text in English. Spine slightly wrinkled, rubbed with use. Few small brown spots. Corrected second edition of the most popular English cookbook of the first half of the 19th century, published by Maria Eliza Rundell (1745-1828) in 1806. Aimed at middle-class housewives, this publishing phenomenon sold around half a million copies during Rundell's lifetime. As well as covering food preparation, the book offers advice on medicine, brewing and includes a section entitled "Instructions for Servants". The book contains a recipe for tomato sauce - probably the first in written history - and the first written recipe for Scotch eggs. Rundell also advises readers to avoid waste. Copy complete with pages 28 and 29 bis (numbered 28* and 29*), frontispiece and 9 hors-texte. From the library of French chef Raymond Oliver (1909-1990), with bookplate in the name of his pseudonym "Rouvier de Vaulgran". A pleasant copy.
