[CERVANTES]. Don Quichotte: suite of 18 engravings inspired - Lot 89
[CERVANTES]. Don Quichotte: suite of 18 engravings inspired by Charles-Antoine Coypel.
Beautiful suite of 18 plates inspired by Coypel's compositions for the Manufacture des Gobelins.
Paris, Radiguès, circa 1730.
Eighteen copper engravings (28 x 37 cm) framed under passe-partout.
Slight foxing to some, but overall bright.
A very fine suite of eighteen anonymous engravings of scenes from Don Quixote, captioned in French and Spanish, published by Jacques Valentin Radiguès and later reprinted by Chéreau. Five bear the publisher's name.
Naïve in execution, the compositions are inspired by the tapestry cartoons painted by Charles-Antoine Coypel around 1715 for the Don Quichotte hanging at the Manufacture des Gobelins. They include scenes of Sancho's departure for the island of Barataria, Don Quixote triumphing over the Chevalier des Miroirs, Don Quixote rescuing Melisandre and Gamache's wedding feast.
A very fine, fresh set.
