Paris, Maradan, An sixième (1798).

Anonymous first edition, "very rare" according to Escoffier, with an intaglio frontispiece of Suzette imploring Madame de Senneterre. This novel, recounting the thwarted love affairs of a young commoner during the French Revolution, was a great success when it was published. It was written clandestinely under the Directoire by Joseph Fiévée (1767-1839), a journalist and later secret agent under the Empire.
[Barbier, I, 1114; Escoffier, n°88]
A delightful copy.
