A superb copy, in the original, from the library of Charles Cousin, in a full contemporary morocco binding. Paris, Michel Le Petit, 1674. In-12, full red ochre morocco, ribbed spine set with a gilt frieze, gilt fleurons and double framing to the entrenerfs, gilt lettrine, triple framing with gilt corner irons on the boards, ornate coupes, interior roulette, all edges gilt. Contemporary binding. 6 ff.n.ch. and 319 pp. with title finial, a number of bands, lettering and endpapers. Restored split at head of spine, minor rubbing, edges slightly darkened, very rare spotting and marginal wetness to last few leaves. Author's name annotated in pen on title. First edition of this treatise by René Le Bossu (1631-1680), which sets out and attempts to reconcile the principles of Aristotelian and Cartesian physics. Ex-libris of bibliophile and freemason Charles Cousin with the motto "C'est ma toquade. Jean s'en va comme il étoit venu" and the monogram J. F. T. [Jean de La Fontaine Toqué] on the flyleaf. A splendid copy in full contemporary morocco.
