Polemical translation of the New Testament by Le Maistre de Sacy (1613-1684) published by Elzevier, in a rich binding with the coat of arms of Pierre-Michel-Marie Double, bishop of Tarbes.
Mons [Amsterdam], Garpard Migeot [Elzevier], 1672.
In-16, full long-grained red morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and small fleurons, English green title-piece, boards framed with a wide floral frieze with gilt zoomorphic figures and arms stamped with a ducal crown and surmounted by a miter in the center of the boards, gilt garland on the spines and collars and gilt edges.
364 pp. - 4 ff.n.ch. - 280 pp. - 4 ff.n.ch. - 10 pp. - 10 blank ff.n.ch., one full-page woodcut.
Slight wear, wormhole at head of spine, lack of gilding to arms on second board, light wetness at top of about twenty pages in middle of volume, small restoration to spine of title page, very rare foxing.
Rare translation of the New Testament first published in 1667 by Elzevier in Amsterdam, under pseudonym and false address. Produced by Louis-Isaac Le Maistre de Sacy (1613-1684) and his collaborator-friends, it is the result of a long-standing project, probably initiated in 1655 with the collaboration of Blaise Pascal. The author's literary activities led to his imprisonment for a time.
Already of bibliographical interest, this copy is bound in the coat of arms of Pierre-Michel-Marie Double (1767-1844 - bishop of Tarbes from 1833 to 1844).
The work is bound with "Les Epistres de Saint-Paul. Les Epistres Canonique. L'Apocalypse", also by Elzevier at the same date, in the second part.
Good condition for this copy, with a binding as rich as the history of the work it contains.
