Paris, Damascène Morgand, 1883.
In-4, turquoise publisher's boards, gilt title on spine and front cover, and stamped and gilt plant decoration on front cover.
60 pp. including 52 illustrated poetic or literary extracts, 5 engraved frontispiece titles and a facsimile of a letter from Alexandre Dumas.
Some foxing on cover, very rare foxing inside.
A rare copy of this illustrated literary work, limited to 300 proofs with the engraved letter, this one of 100 on papier du Marais.
Eugène Lami (1800-1890), a pupil of Horace Vernet and Baron Gros and friend of Géricault, illustrates this volume with great sensitivity. The etchings by Adolphe Lalauze (1836-1906) are of a rare mastery of execution, making this modern illustré one of the most charming.
Jean Engel, known for his hardcover bindings of Jules Verne's works, signed the cover.
A fresh interior and a very fine edition.
