Polychrome enameled earthenware double bowl decorated with a hen and roosters with the words "Une poule survint et voilà la guerre allumé" ("A hen appeared and the war was lit"). These are the first lines of the two roosters from La Fontaine's Fables, Livre VII, Fable 12: "Deux coqs vivaient en paix ; une poule survint, et voilà la guerre allumée" ("Two roosters lived in peace; a hen came along, and war was kindled"). Enameled seal painted on the reverse in red EG surrounding the Lorraine cross deposited by Émile GALLÉ in N[ancy]. Circa 1879-1889. D. 12 × 18.5 cm. Note the misspelling of a collaborator, rare in Émile Gallé's work.
