* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). - Lot 86
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Circular high-fired earthenware dish with painted polychrome enamel decoration of the profile of Lady Barkley (Elizabeth Dauncey) after Hans Holbein the Younger. Enameled handwritten signature on reverse, circa 1880. Diameter: 28 cm. (Minor restorations and defects) After his arrival in England in 1526, Holbein rubbed shoulders with the circle of Thomas More, a close associate of Erasmus and an important figure in English humanism. Holbein painted portraits of the scholar and his family, including a profile portrait of his daughter Elisabeth Dauncey, mistakenly identified as the Lady Barkley at the time Émile Gallé painted her portrait. This preparatory study, produced around 1526-1527 and on which Gallé drew inspiration, is now in the Royal Collection Trust at Windsor Castle. The original painting was destroyed in a fire in 1752; only early copies remain.
