* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904).
Archaic japanese vase in blue and brown enameled earthenware with white flamed shoulder frieze.
Enameled stamp on reverse, circa 1890.
H. 23 cm.
A rare earthenware vase by Gallé, part of the preparation for the Art Nouveau turn and enameling research using the Japanese flowing enamel technique, and influenced by contemporary ceramists such as Théodore Deck, Carriès and Dalpayrat.
An identical example is preserved in the Matsue Kitahori Museum (Japan) under the title "Vase bleu à large col, inv. n° 52, dated 1889".
Through the almost architectural simplicity of its form and the importance given to material and enamel effects, this work illustrates Gallé's decorative research at the end of the 1880s, at the time of the Paris Universal Exhibition.
