* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). - Lot 138
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904).
Pitcher with zoomorphic spout in tin-glazed earthenware with polychrome enameled floral decoration on an embossed or honeycombed ground with decorative basketwork, flowers and insects.
Handwritten signature on reverse, circa 1880.
H. 35.5 cm.
Rare piece evoking a bird. It is part of the corpus of zoomorphic pieces of which the Musée d'Orsay holds several examples (cf Sauterelle zoomorphic jug, notice 152890).
Our vase seems to have been made earlier: it retains more of the shape and decoration inherited from Saint Clément.
The head and handle, on the other hand, already foreshadow the organic Art Nouveau vision.
