* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). - Lot 149
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904).
Rare cigar box with two drawers concealed by a sliding front. It is made of molded varnished wood, decorated on all sides with seashores and fishermen, and stands on 4 round wood-turned legs.
Engraved signature on the reverse, Nancy, circa 1900.
D. 13.5 × 23 × 13 cm.
(Slight warping and lifting, some wear scratches).
Decor worked on wood using thermocautery hot-iron engraving (burnt-wood technique or pyrography), using the wood's vein flaws to exploit them in the landscape. In this way, wood grain becomes a poetic horizon.
To our knowledge, this is one of the very few complete examples documented.
