[AFRICA] - HUGUENIN (Jean-Michel). Collection of 34 unpublis - Lot 3
[AFRICA] - HUGUENIN (Jean-Michel). Collection of 34 unpublished photographs from the Jean-Michel Huguenin fonds, born around 1929. Exceptional set of ethnographic photographs of Tutsi populations (Rwanda) captured during the 1920s and acquired by collector and art dealer Jean-Michel Huguenin. 2 in-4 oblong (240x170 mm) laced albums, anthracite cardboard covers decorated with a cold-stamped art deco motif. 1 album of 20 black-and-white photographs and 1 album of 14 sepia photographs, all matted in round-edged windows. Covers slightly frayed, tears at head of one volume. Precious set of 34 photographs that plunge us into the heart of the lives of the Tutsi populations that Jean-Michel Huguenin would probably meet some twenty years later. Shot in black & white and sepia, these photographs capture the tribe's way of life, customs and traditions, through a wide variety of scenes: men armed with spears and bows and dressed in their traditional garb, wicker basket making, food preparation, bathing in a river, families gathered in front of their homes, etc. The set is enhanced by 3 postcards, each illustrated with a black-and-white photograph. Carefully preserved in its two art deco albums.
