[GRANDVILLE, Jean-Jacques]. Collection of prints: Fables de La Fontaine, Métamorphoses du Jour...containing a beautiful ink drawing by Grandville. Extensive collection of illustrations by Grandville for the press and publishing. In-folio, black half-chagrin, spines with gilded fillets. 235 plates mounted on leaves, approx. 40 loose plates and clippings. Binding rubbed, corners dulled, restoration to front cover. Beautiful collection of numerous illustration prints by Jean-Jacques Grandville (1803-1847) for the press and publishing industry. Most of the plates are taken from Les Fables de La Fontaine (Paris, Furne, 1839) and mounted on the leaves. There are also color plates from Métamorphoses du Jour, Grandville's satire on the society of his time, blending the human and the animal in the same way as La Fontaine. The set also includes illustrations for the newspapers Le Charivari and La Caricature, as well as various amusing productions by the artist. 235 plates from Les Fables de La Fontaine illustrées par Grandville (Paris, Furne, 1839) mounted on album leaves. Covers of the two volumes of the same edition of the Fables. 11 plates and leaves from Le Charivari, with an ink drawing copying Le Bal des Insectes. 9 plates from La Caricature, including 3 in color. 1 plate from "Chaque âge a ses plaisirs" ("Les Jouissances de l'âge mur, de 25 à 30 ans"). 8 vignettes mounted on strong leaves and 6 cut-outs from Cent Proverbes (Paris, Fournier, 1845). 3 plates from Petites misères de la vie humaine (Paris, Fournier, 1843), including double frontispiece. 8 color plates from various editions of Métamorphoses du Jour. Covers for Fleurs animées (Paris, Gonet, 1847. T1 and 2), with the publisher's catalog cover for the same edition. Various vignettes and ornaments mounted on the last leaves of the album. A rich set, an excellent overview of the diversity of Grandville's production and its evolution over time.
