[MANUSCRIT XVIIIe - BAYONNE] - COMPAIGNE (Bertrand). Chronic - Lot 47
[MANUSCRIT XVIIIe - BAYONNE] - COMPAIGNE (Bertrand). Chronicle of the city and diocese of Bayonne. Delicate manuscript copy of the historical study by Bertrand Compaigne (1607-1676), opening with a title page decorated in watercolor. In-8, brown basane, ribbed spine decorated with gilt irons with red title page, boards decorated with a fillet framed in cold, edges with gilt roulette, all edges red. 208 pages handwritten in black, red and green ink on 123 leaves. Title page with floral decoration in pen and watercolor. Text ruled. Binding somewhat rubbed, discreet scratches to first cover, leather missing from edge. Some common freckling, slight yellowing and ink discharges on some leaves, overall bright. Published in Pau by Desbarats in 1663, this study comprises a historical chronicle of the city of Bayonne, a catalog of its bishops, governors, mayors and aldermen, a memoir providing a political and economic description of the city, a statistical table on the demographics of the region's communes, and four royal ordinances. The study contains numerous forgeries designed to flatter the local elites by providing evidence of their seniority. An exquisitely calligraphic copy signed Jean Corrioles and dated November 1, 1751, featuring a delicate polychrome floral decoration on the title page and an eagle on the dedication signature. Provenance: Bibliothèque du docteur Louis Raillard.
