DESLIGNÈRES (André) & ROUPNEL (Gaston). Nono. - Lot 132
DESLIGNÈRES (André) & ROUPNEL (Gaston). Nono. Fine edition published by Mornay, illustrated with original woodcuts by André Deslignères. Leading copy on japon impérial. Paris, Mornay, 1928. In-4 (255x200mm), paperback, covers preserved, hardback maroquin folder, spine ribbed with gilt title, slipcase lined. 303pp. Exemplaire numéro 1 sur Japon ancien à la forme numéroté et renfernant la moitié des originaux et les différents états des gravures. Originally published in 1910, "Nono" was shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt that same year. It describes the life of Burgundian winegrowers; Gaston Roupnel was a historian of rural life. André Deslignères (1880-1968) began his career as a draughtsman in a Northern trimmings factory, before trying his hand at copperplate engraving, which he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1905. In 1921, he founded the first and only Salon de l'OEuvre anonyme; in his studio on boulevard de Clichy, Deslignières frequented Montmartre artists and practiced painting. His studio was a meeting place for Utrillo, Carco, Mac Orlan, Dorgelès and the rest of the merry Montmartre gang who met in the evenings at Father Frédé's home, Le Lapin Agile. The drawings, done in pencil and bistre wash, are all signed by the artist and produced on laminated sheets in a separate paperback book.
