Prestigious provenance; James de Rotschild (1792-1868) was a German banker, founder of the Paris branch of the Rothschild family and an important bibliophile. He inspired three great French writers: François Leuwen, the father of Stendhal's hero in Lucien Leuwen; Baron de Nucingen, in Balzac's Comédie humaine; and banker Gundermann, in Zola's L'Argent. It is said that under the July monarchy, he was, along with the King, the richest man in France.
