FERROUSSAT DE CASTELBON (Étienne-Hubert). Reflections on the - Lot 113
FERROUSSAT DE CASTELBON (Étienne-Hubert). Reflections on the Poor Quality of Plaster and Its Causes, and Methods for Achieving Better Production. A rare work, important for understanding the manufacture of plaster in the 18th century, one of the most widely used materials in construction. Paris, Chez Lottin l'Aîné, 1776. Volume in-12 (175×115 mm), paperback, excerpt from a collection and bound in a pink cover. 112 pp. Cover damaged at the lower corner. A few scattered foxing spots. First edition. Illustrated with a beautiful frontispiece drawn by Fossier and engraved on copper by Bréant. Hubert de Castelbon Ferroussat was an architect who became the owner of a plaster works in 1771. In 1775, he sent a petition to the King in which he complained about the poor quality of plaster in Paris and proposed solutions to improve it. This book, published a year later, is his plea. In it, Ferroussat summarizes a century of controversy between masons and plasterers, while proposing innovative technical solutions to improve the quality of the plaster delivered to construction sites. (See Tiffanie Le Dantec, Plaster-Coated Facades of Île-de-France. The Decline of Exterior Plaster, from the 17th to the 20th Century, 2019). A valuable work for the history of construction techniques, the building trades, and urban policies on the eve of the Revolution.
