[ARCHITECTURE] DELORME, Philibert, and NIZET, Charles (eds.) - Lot 29
[ARCHITECTURE] DELORME, Philibert, and NIZET, Charles (eds.). The Works of Philibert de l'Orme. An excellent facsimile of the 1567 edition of this highly renowned and richly illustrated treatise on architecture. Paris, Librairies-Imprimeries réunies, 1894. Large folio, red half-shagreen with corner pieces, spine with dotted raised bands and panels decorated with gilded filigree metalwork, original covers preserved. XXX, 4 f., 12 unnumbered folios, 327 and 2 folios, 7 unnumbered folios of plates; numerous facsimile vignettes and plates. Corners very slightly rubbed, some foxing and browned pages. Facsimile (using the Motteroz process) of the 1567 edition of this famous treatise on architecture. The edition was prepared by Charles Nizet, a French diocesan architect of the second half of the 19th century. A royal architect in the service of Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici, who fell from grace in the late 1550s, Philibert Delorme, or de l’Orme (1514–1570), spent the final years of his life writing. Richly illustrated, his treatises emphasize the importance of the senses for anyone who wishes to be a good architect, while he reserves scorn for the unskilled, who, in his view, do nothing but “babble and slander.” A very fine copy in very good condition.
