Paris, “Raisons d’être,” 1952 in-4, loose-leaf, illustrated hardcover, illustrated blue slipcase, and blue publisher’s case. 86 pp., black aquatint frontispiece, 7 lithographs, and 3 linocut initial letters. Normal wear and scuffing on the slipcase. First edition illustrated by Henri Matisse. This touching collaboration is the result of a long and beautiful friendship between the painter and André Rouveyre, who had met in Gustave Moreau’s studio in 1896. Limited edition of 350 copies; this is one of 300 numbered copies on Arches vellum, with the page numbered (No. 47). A very fine copy.
