NOAILLES, Anna de. *Âme des Paysages*. - Lot 264
NOAILLES, Anna de. *Âme des Paysages*. A fine copy of this charming illustrated first edition, printed on Japanese paper, one of only 22 rare copies featuring a double suite of illustrations. Paris, Cent Femmes Amies des Livres, 1928. Quarto, publisher’s binding, cream morocco, ribbed spine decorated with the title in gold lettering, covers framed by a triple gilt line and the upper cover bearing the publisher’s gilt monogram, inner border adorned with a gilt garland, gilt head edge, covers and spine preserved. 103 pp., 17 color woodcuts, including 5 full-page illustrations. Spine darkened, some scuffing on the slightly soiled binding. First edition, illustrated with 17 woodcuts by Pierre Bouchet, based on compositions by Anna de Noailles, from the first print run Limited edition of 130 numbered copies on Japanese paper, signed in ink by the author; this one is one of 22 containing a double suite in black and color (no. 67), inscribed to “Madame Jean Stern.” In this volume, Anna de Noailles (1876–1933) celebrates the landscapes of Nice and Savoie, which she illustrates with delightfully modern watercolors likely inspired by the works of Matisse or Pierre Bonnard from the same period. Pierre Bouchet demonstrates great technical mastery in transferring these vibrantly colored compositions to wood in beautiful tones. Engraved bookplate by Jean Stern (1875–1962), a fencer and writer, famous for his involvement in horse racing but also for having dueled with Robert de Montesquiou (which he won). A fine copy, in very fresh condition.
