An Italian writer deeply influenced during a stay in France by the ideas of the Enlightenment and the Revolution, Silvio Pellico (1789–1854) was a leading figure among the patriotic writers who, in the early 19th century, opposed Austrian rule. Arrested, imprisoned, and narrowly escaping a death sentence, he recounted his imprisonment in his major work *My Prisons* (1832), which established him as the embodiment of Italian identity.
