Madame de Sévigné. Letters of Madame de Sévigné, Her Family, - Lot 287

Madame de Sévigné. Letters of Madame de Sévigné, Her Family, and Her Friends. With portraits, views, and facsimiles. The first critical edition bringing together the correspondence—some of it previously unpublished—of the great 17th-century letter-writer. Paris, J.-J. Blaise, 1818. 10 in-8 volumes, each bound in aubergine-colored glazed half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gold and silver fillets, title and volume number in gold lettering. 8 portraits, 12 views of castles, and 1 view of a chapel, 1 plate of coats of arms, and 10 letters reproduced in facsimile. Spines sun-faded; minimal wormholes on the lower edges of 4 volumes; some foxing. First critical edition, complete in 10 volumes. “It contains nearly one hundred unpublished letters and more than three hundred unpublished fragments” (Tchemerzine, X, 329). Two additional supplementary volumes followed in 1820. Ex-libris stamped “Corrard de Breban.” A delightful set.
