BERNANOS, Georges. Signed autograph letter addressed to [Abe - Lot 39

BERNANOS, Georges. Signed autograph letter addressed to [Abel Bonnard]. 2½ pages, in-12 format, on mourning paper (180 x 138 mm). “Sanctuary of La Salette” (Isère), July 29, 1928. Marginal tears that do not affect the text. Bernanos, on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, continues writing *La Joie* in “this ethereal solitude.” He nonetheless takes the time to thank Abel Bonnard for sending him his “charming book” and assures him of his friendship. “I say ‘charming’ because everything that comes from you is charming at first, and one only comes to know its profound—and so often cruel—truth through experience. But it is when the drink becomes too bitter that you present it with even greater grace and that peaceful assurance that belongs only to you.”
