[BRITTANY] RADIGUET, Max. L'École de Monsieur Toupinel (Scen - Lot 50
[BRITTANY] RADIGUET, Max. L'École de Monsieur Toupinel (Scenes from Childhood). No place [Brest], no publisher [printed by Lefournier aîné], 1870. In-12, black half-shagreen, ribbed spine. 117 pp. Black stain on the front cover; corners and edges very slightly rubbed. First edition of this autobiographical account in which the writer and traveler Max Radiguet (1816–1899) recounts his childhood memories at one of the very first mutual schools established in Brittany. Print run stated on the title page: 50 copies “offered for sale to benefit the wounded.” In the fall of 1870, Brittany mobilized thousands of troops to support the Franco-Prussian War initiated by Napoleon III. As a major military port, Brest became a hub for receiving soldiers, organizing the logistics of local ambulance services, and establishing committees of the Society for the Relief of Wounded Soldiers (the predecessor of the French Red Cross). An excellent copy in a period binding, enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author.
