[CYPRUS]. SANSON D'ABBEVILLE, Nicolas. Cyprus Insula. Paris, Pierre Mariette, n.d. [c. 1658–1666]. Copper engraving (37.5 x 48.5 cm) hand-colored on laid paper (43.5 x 60 cm). Margins slightly frayed with two tears in the upper corners, without damage to the map. This rare map, delicately highlighted in yellow along the coastline, comes from the principal geographical work by Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600–1667), *Cartes générales de toutes les parties du monde* (General Maps of All Parts of the World), considered the first major French atlas. It is derived from the 1637 map by Jan Jansson (1588–1664, Dutch). It is adorned with several ships, the coats of arms of the Ottoman Empire and the House of Lusignan, kings of Cyprus and Jerusalem, as well as a Cupid enthroned on the cartouche, surrounded by pairs of doves. A beautiful map from the mid-17th century.
