NOISETTE, Louis. *The Fruit Garden: A History, Description, Cultivation, and Uses of Fruit Trees, Strawberry Plants, and the Finest Varieties of Grapevines Found in Europe*... An important treatise by one of the great French horticulturists of the 19th century; the first two volumes contain 10 beautiful engraved plates. Paris, Audot, 1821. 2 volumes in 1 large quarto (in-4) volume, pine-green marbled paper board, smooth spine with an orange leather title label. 95 pp. and 10 engraved plates, including one fold-out. The cardboard binding is scuffed, with tears at the joints and a tear at the bottom; the printed pages show foxing. First edition, compiled by L.-A. Gautier based on the notes of Louis Noisette. This volume brings together the first volume, complete with all 10 plates, and the second volume, without the final volume. Louis Noisette (1772–1849), a French horticulturist and nurseryman, was one of the leading specialists in pomology in the early 19th century. His experience in the cultivation and selection of fruit trees culminated in this comprehensive treatise devoted to fruit species and varieties, as well as to techniques for cultivation, grafting, and tree management. A fine copy; plates are clean.
