[PERFUME] RIMMEL, Eugène. *The Book of Perfumes*. - Lot 240
[PERFUME] RIMMEL, Eugène. *The Book of Perfumes*. Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott and Co, 1867 IN-4, publisher’s cardboard binding, burgundy percaline Bradel binding, smooth spine adorned with a richly decorated gilt title, gilded border decoration on the covers with, in the center, a repeat of the title and the author’s name framing a coat of arms designed by the author and the motto “Non cuique datum est habere nasum,” gilt edges. XX and 266 pp., frontispiece, 11 black-and-white plates, and numerous illustrations in the text, typographic ornamentation on every page. In English. Spine restored, corners worn, frontispiece leaf slightly frayed, small tear on page 3, rare foxing. American edition of this famous work, which traces the history of perfumes from antiquity to the 19th century, illustrated with over 250 vignettes by Bourdelin, Thomas, and others... Indicated as the 5th edition. We owe this study, first published in London in 1965, to Eugène Rimmel (1821–1887), a Franco-British perfumer and businessman whose name has entered common parlance to refer to mascara, the first industrially produced eyelash makeup. At the end, there is an interesting appendix listing the main ingredients used in perfumery. A lovely copy in a publisher’s hardcover binding featuring the author’s coat of arms and the amusing motto, “Not everyone is blessed with a good nose!”
