In-8, midnight blue half-shagreen, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small gilt metalwork, gilt head, untrimmed, covers preserved (front cover illustrated). 58 pp., numerous illustrations in the text. Normal wear, mainly at the corners; covers slightly discolored. A charming edition illustrated with delicate watercolors by Eugène Grivaz (1852–1915), engraved by Arents and printed in black, bistre, or blue. This “bourgeois little story,” a satirical and romantic poem first published in 1857, was banned from sale due to its “rather risqué” passages. Large “A. Rodelet” bookplate on the back cover. A fine copy on Dutch laid paper, in a good binding.
