[AFRICA - ETHNOLOGY] TAUXIER, Louis. The Gouro and Gagou Peo - Lot 7
[AFRICA - ETHNOLOGY] TAUXIER, Louis. The Gouro and Gagou Peoples (Central Ivory Coast). A sought-after first edition of this pioneering and comprehensive study of the ethnic groups of central Ivory Coast. Paris, Peul Geuthner—“Etudes soudanaises” series, 1924. In-4, midnight blue half-basane, spine with four faux ribs decorated with a gold fleur-de-lis and the title in gold, front cover preserved. 370 pp., 6 plates on coated paper. Paper slightly yellowed, a few foxing spots on the last two leaves. First edition of this monograph devoted to the peoples of central Côte d’Ivoire. Colonial administrator Louis Tauxier (1871–1942) presents one of the very first comprehensive studies of the Gouro and Gagou ethnic groups, constituting a rich source of anthropological information: detailed demographic and geographic data, comparative linguistic glossaries, inventories of sacred artifacts and crafts, as well as a substantial collection of traditional tales and fables. A fine copy.
