[BIBLE - WALLOON CHURCH]. The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments. A new edition revised from the Hebrew and Greek texts by the pastors and professors of Geneva. [Followed by] The Psalms of David, set to French verse, revised and approved by the Walloon Synod of the United Provinces. An excellent copy of the French-language Protestant Bible intended for use by the Huguenots in the Netherlands. The volume, complete with the Psalms set to music, is preserved in a richly decorated contemporary Dutch binding in full red morocco leather. Amsterdam, D. Onder de Linden, 1761. In-12 (80x140 mm), full red morocco, plain spine with raised bands highlighted by a gilt frieze, panels adorned with a central gilt diamond-shaped fleur-de-lis and framed by small floral scrolls in the spandrels, covers adorned with a central fleur-de-lis within a double frame of gilded fillets, with floral motifs at the corners and a fine floral frieze along the outer edge, gilded inner roulette pattern repeated on the edges, gilt edges. Approximately 1,000 pages (unpaginated) followed by 324 pages (Psalms of David) in two columns, 3 engraved frontispiece titles, and numerous musical scores, with a few tailpieces. Minor scuffing, spine creased and very slightly sun-faded, minor restoration at the bottom of the spine, corners slightly indented. Very rare pinholes. French edition of the Geneva version, used in the congregations of the Walloon Church, containing the Old and New Testaments, each adorned with a beautiful engraved title page. Formed by French-speaking Protestants who had fled persecution in the Southern Netherlands, these communities in exile later welcomed French Huguenots after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, maintaining French as the liturgical language. Bound together with: The Psalms of David, set in French verse, revised and approved by the Walloon Synod of the United Provinces, new edition. Amsterdam, published by Onder de Linden, 1747. Preceded by an engraved title page, this important liturgical edition is distinguished by its remarkable musical typography, in which the entire collection of rhymed psalms is accompanied by melodies notated on five-line staves. It is supplemented by ecclesiastical prayers and the catechism. A very fine copy in a contemporary Dutch morocco binding, in beautifully fresh condition.
