[BIBLE]PLANTIN, Christophe (ed.). Novum Testamentum Graece, - Lot 40
[BIBLE]PLANTIN, Christophe (ed.). Novum Testamentum Graece, cum vulgata interpretatione Latina Graeci contextus lineis inserta. A fine copy of this sought-after bilingual Greek-Latin Bible, printed in Antwerp by Plantin, in a full leather binding with Renaissance-inspired decoration. Antverpiae (Antwerp), Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1583. In-12 (180 x 117 mm), full calfskin, spine with four false raised bands richly decorated with gilt friezes and fleurons with a gilt title, blind-stamped frieze framed by two gilt fillets on the covers, adorned with a rich and broad blind-stamped design featuring a central rosette, guilloché corners and caps, gilt edges. 1 f. (title page), 2–369 ff. and 1 f. n.ch. Scuffs at the clasps, nicks, two small losses at the caps, black mark from a former label at the top of the spine, rare scattered foxing spots. A separate edition of the New Testament in Greek and Latin, printed by Christophe Plantin. This sought-after bilingual version was based on the monumental Polyglot Bible by the Spanish theologian Benito Arias Montano (1527–1598). Printed in a more manageable format intended for students, the volume presents the Greek text in interlinear form, accompanied word for word by its Latin translation, supplemented by the Vulgate in the margin. [Brunet V, 738]. On the title page, which bears the publisher’s famous mark, there is a wet stamp of an ex-libris (a rampant lion facing a tree beneath a marquis’s crown). A fine copy, complete, attractively presented in a 19th-century decorative binding inspired by the Renaissance.
