An exceptional copy on laid paper, complete with its 1874 appendix and magnificently illustrated with 50 plates, including Louis Boulanger’s legendary “Ronde du Sabbat” and Durandeau’s “Les Nuits de Monsieur Baudelaire.” Paris, P. Rouquette, 1872 and 1874. 2 volumes in 1 in-4 volume, red coarse-grained half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, covers preserved. XXXII and 335 pp., frontispiece, engraved title page. Minimal scuffing on the binding, some foxing (speckled spots). Second expanded edition, featuring a frontispiece by Bracquemond and an engraved title page by Célestin Nanteuil. The supplementary appendix is bound as a continuation with continuous pagination. This copy, printed on laid paper, is interspersed with 50 documents of varying sizes (some engraved or lithographed, others on Chinese or Japanese paper), creating an exceptional collection of illustrations. It includes a portrait of Asselineau by Flameng on Chinese paper inserted before the title page, portraits of the great authors and illustrators of the Romantic period (Victor Hugo, Charles Nodier, Sainte-Beuve, Jules Janin, Théophile Gautier, Gavarni, and a double portrait of the Johannot brothers, etc.), as well as a few engraved titles and illustrations. Of particular note are: - a reduced print of “La Ronde du Sabbat” by Levasseur, after Louis Boulanger, intended to serve as the illustrated cover for the score of Ballad XIV from Victor Hugo’s *Odes et Ballades*, set to music by Louis Niedermeyer (lithograph by Mlle Formentin). - the rare and spectacular fold-out satirical print by Durandeau: “Les Nuits de Monsieur Baudelaire,” from the “Messieurs de la Lyre” series (lithograph on heavy paper). Ex libris embossed with the gold-colored monogram “N.I.” within a red shield. A copy in fine condition, particularly desirable.
