GIDE, André, and ALLÉGRET, Marc. *Journey to the Congo*, fol - Lot 136
GIDE, André, and ALLÉGRET, Marc. *Journey to the Congo*, followed by *Return from Chad* and illustrated with sixty-four previously unpublished photographs by Marc Allégret. A superb edition on Arches vellum, illustrated with photographs reproduced as heliogravures, providing a humanistic counterpoint to this travelogue by an author outraged by the exploitation of the indigenous population. Paris, Gallimard, 1929. Large quarto, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, spine with raised bands accented by a gold fillet, gilt head, untrimmed, covers and spine preserved. 304 pp., 64 heliogravure photographs, and 4 maps. Restorations at the top and bottom of the spine. Deluxe edition illustrated with 64 full-page heliogravure photographs by Marc Allégret. One of 1,571 copies numbered on Arches vellum (no. 1339), the only edition printed on large-format paper following 28 copies on Imperial Japan paper. [Naville 247]. In 1925–1926, André Gide (1869–1951) undertook an official trip to Central Africa alongside his young companion and protégé Marc Allégret (1900–1973). This journey gave rise to this multifaceted edition: the travelogue denouncing the colonial system is enhanced by the photographs of Marc Allégret, whose profoundly humanistic perspective offers a dignified and striking visual counterpoint to Gide’s literary indictment. Bookplate by Georges Auguste Dormeuil. A very fine copy.
