HENRIET, Frédéric. *Le Paysagiste aux champs*. Sketches from - Lot 148
HENRIET, Frédéric. *Le Paysagiste aux champs*. Sketches from Life. First edition, complete with all 12 etchings. A paperback copy, very well preserved and housed in a later thin slipcase. Paris, Achille Faure, 1866. In-8, paperback, in a later black shagreen slipcase with corners; spine with faux raised bands and gilt title. 74 pp., title engraved by Péguénot and 11 etchings with serpentine borders. Spine slightly creased with minor paper loss at the top and bottom; stain on the lower cover; light handling stains along the margins of pages 30, 38, 54, 62, and 70; light foxing on the last etching. First edition of these famous chronicles devoted to the Barbizon School. The illustrations include 12 superb original full-page etchings based on works by Camille Corot, Charles-François Daubigny, Maxime Lalanne, Léopold Desbrosses, Léon Lhermitte, and Auguste Péquégnot, printed on heavy paper on the presses of the Delâtre company. [Vicaire, IV, 71]. Trained as a lawyer, Frédéric Henriet (1826–1918) abandoned the courtroom out of a passion for the artistic bohemian lifestyle and became the private secretary of the Imperial Museums Administration. Converted to plein air painting by his mentor Daubigny, he spent his life roaming the forests with his easel, establishing himself as the designated confidant and most intimate chronicler of the 19th-century landscape painting revolution. An excellent copy, as published.
