HÉRIAT, Philippe. The Boussardel Family. - Lot 151
HÉRIAT, Philippe. The Boussardel Family. A copy belonging to Madame Simone André Maurois, featuring a dedicatory inscription and two autograph letters from the author. Bound in a fine full morocco binding with geometric decoration from the workshop of Victor Granghaud. Paris, Gallimard, 1944. In-8, full red morocco, spine with raised bands accented by a gold fillet, compartments adorned with a mosaic-style frame of pine-green morocco leather, a broad abstract geometric design on the front cover composed of gold and black fillets, another more classical geometric design on the lower cover, gilt edges. Binding signed V. Granghaud. 465 pp., fold-out insert featuring a reproduction on coated paper of an engraved view of northern Paris. Minimal scuffing on the top cap, spine very slightly browned. First edition of this novel, which received the Grand Prix du Roman from the Académie Française in 1947. Copy on alfa (no. 590). Contrary to the printed colophon, an errata sheet pasted opposite the half-title page indicates that the print run, “due to a technical incident,” was limited to 1,000 copies on Navarre alfa paper and that the copies on pure-thread paper were not printed. A personal copy belonging to Madame Simone André Maurois, featuring her bookplate engraved by J. Jacquin after a design by H. Mondor, dated April 1935. It is enhanced by a signed autograph dedication: “To Madame Simone André-Maurois, whose literary friendship moves and flatters me, this *FAMILLE BOUSSARDEL* with respectful regards and the sincerely eager tributes of Philippe Hériat.” The copy contains, at the beginning of the volume, two autograph, signed letters from the author addressed to Simone André Maurois, thanking her for her interest in *La Famille Boussardel*, which the writer’s wife wishes to have bound (2½ pages, in-8 format, on her printed letterhead, May 10, 1947, with envelope; and 3½ pages, on her printed letterhead, June 20, 1947, with envelope); a printed business card with a handwritten envelope addressed to the same recipient. An elegant copy bound in full morocco leather with decorative motifs from the workshop of Victor Granghaud, where Simone André Maurois had several of her books bound.
