MONSTRELET, Enguerrand de. Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monst - Lot 218
MONSTRELET, Enguerrand de. Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet, a gentleman who once resided in Cambrai in Cambresis, detailing the cruel civil wars between the Houses of Orléans and Burgundy, the occupation of Paris and Normandy by the English, their expulsion, and other memorable events that occurred in his time in this Kingdom and foreign lands. The Hundred Years’ War as Seen by Monstrelet: the first critical edition from the Renaissance. Paris, Pierre L’Huillier, 1572. 3 tomes in 2 small folio volumes (330 x 210 mm), each bound in full marbled brown calfskin, ribbed spine, panels decorated with gilt metal tools, gilt title and volume number, gilt roulettes on the edges, red edges. [12] - 324 ff.ch. - [6], [6] - 201 ff.ch. [5]; [10] - 255 ff.ch. - [12]. Publisher’s vignettes, headbands, initials. Bindings rubbed, caps missing and leather worn, numerous water stains, fragile upper hinge on the first volume (first two leaves detached), intermediate title page missing from Volume II, last two leaves restored. A fine critical edition of this famous chronicle of the Hundred Years’ War, originally written by the Picard Enguerrand de Monstrelet (c. 1390–1453). The original text covers the years 1400 to 1444, extended in the third volume by anonymous continuators through 1516. The humanist and historiographer Denys Sauvage (1520–1587) corrected and revised the text, comparing the earlier, flawed versions with the valuable manuscripts of the Royal Library. A label from a Bordeaux bookstore appears on the inside cover: “chez les frères Labottière.”
