[PAMPHLETS - ROTHSCHILD]. A significant collection of 20 publications concerning the Rothschild dynasty (1846–1941).
An exceptional collection bringing together the major pamphlets from the 1846 controversy surrounding James de Rothschild, supplemented by a collection of anti-Semitic publications and pamphlets extending through 1941.
[Paris, Brussels, Dresden, 1846–1941]
20 volumes in-12 or in-8, paperback, in sheepskin slipcases with titles on the spine in gold lettering.
Signs of handling, some foxing.
An excellent collection of rare pamphlets offering a historical account of nearly a century of economic attitudes, political crises, and the development of modern anti-Semitism in France.
Triggered by the terrible train accident at Fampoux in July 1846, this “war of pamphlets” laid the groundwork for a persistent popular conspiracy myth surrounding the Rothschild dynasty. As such, it constitutes one of the first major examples of modern antisemitism. This collection brings together its key pieces, from the triggering pamphlet by Georges Dairnvæll (*The Edifying and Curious History of Rothschild I, King of the Jews, by Satan*) to the virulent anonymous rebuttals and satires born of the controversy (The Great Trial Between Rothschild I and Satan the Last, or The New Lament of the Wandering Jew). This hostile rhetoric continued throughout the nationalist crises of the Third Republic, as exemplified in particular by the attacks of Édouard Drumont (*Gambetta and His Court: Jewish Barons*) and Max Bewer in Dresden (*Bismarck and Rothschild*). The dossier concludes with the ideological culmination of this century of polemics, embodied in the collaborationist propaganda published during the Occupation by Henri-Robert Petit (Rothschild, 1941).
