[PARIS] PASQUIER, Jean-Jacques, and DENIS, Louis. Topographi - Lot 237
[PARIS] PASQUIER, Jean-Jacques, and DENIS, Louis. Topographic and Annotated Map of Paris. A Useful Work for Citizens and Visitors. Second edition of the first functional guide map of Paris, complete with its three fold-out plates and enhanced with delicate watercolor highlights. Paris, Published by Pasquier, 1765. In-12, marbled calfskin, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small metal embossing featuring a central gilded pomegranate, double gilded fillet framing the covers, gilded fillet on the edges, red edges. 3 unnumbered folios. (title page, dedication, preface), 149 pp. and 34 pp. (table of contents), 1 f.n.ch. (approval). 3 fold-out maps, 40 neighborhood maps, and a double-page map of the Paris area. Binding rubbed, mainly at the corners and spine; cap bands missing; slight tears at the upper joints; fine scuff on the lower cover; small foxing spots on the margins toward the end of the volume. Second edition of the first guidebook to Paris. Some of the maps have been enhanced with watercolor accents (the Seine, certain monuments, or forested areas in the suburbs). A complete copy with all three fold-out plates: - “Geographical Map of the City and Suburbs of Paris” (gridded index map) - “General Map of Paris” (1765), with its detailed cross-reference tables along the margins - “Archdiocese and Surroundings of Paris Divided into Its 7 Rural Deaneries” (1763), detailing the ecclesiastical topography of the suburbs. Dedicated to the Duke of Chevreuse, governor of Paris, this portable atlas-guide breaks with the cumbersome folio volumes of the first half of the century. Its innovative system uses a grid-based general map as an index to guide the reader to 40 neighborhood plates, supplemented by a rich historical description illustrated with vignettes. This edition faithfully captures the major urban changes of the late reign of Louis XV, notably the creation of what would become the Place de la Concorde. A fine copy in a contemporary binding.
