Large quarto (285 x 240 mm), full midnight blue coarse-grained morocco leather, front cover adorned with a geometric composition of gilded and embossed curves, smooth spine with gold embossing, interior edging in the same blue morocco, gray box linings adorned with a pattern of vertical gold and black fillets, gray silk endpapers, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase. Spine very slightly sun-faded. A superb edition of the tales “The Happy Prince” and “The Nightingale and the Rose.” François-Louis Schmied’s illustrations are a masterpiece of color woodcut engraving with rich gold highlights. It includes a total of 4 full-page plates, 2 half-page plates (including one for the cover), 27 vertical headpieces, 23 horizontal headpieces, as well as numerous ornaments and initials. The entire set was woodcut by the artist with technical assistance from Pierre Bouchet and his son Théo Schmied. Detailed captions for all illustrations appear at the end of the volume. A unique edition limited to 162 copies, all printed on large-format vellum paper. This copy bears the number 120 and is signed by François-Louis Schmied in the colophon. The copy is accompanied by an original gouache signed by F.-L. Schmied (dimensions: 265 x 240 mm), executed on heavy paper. A handwritten note on the reverse specifies that this is the original design sketch drawn for a binding by Georges Cretté. From the library of Jean-Claude Chalanson, a passionate collector of illustrated books from the Art Deco period (bookplate on the endpaper). A splendid copy.
