[DOG TEAMS - ANIMAL WELFARE]. Collection on regulations gove - Lot 31
[DOG TEAMS - ANIMAL WELFARE]. Collection on regulations governing dog teams. A collection of documents and images on regulations governing dog teams, including a prefectural decree from the Nord department (1930), a brochure from the SPA (Nantes, 1911), and a vintage postcard (Pouxeux, Vosges). Set of 3 items: - Prefectural decree from the Nord Prefecture: 1 typewritten page in-4 format, dated March 24, 1930, and signed by Deputy Secretary General Louis Boujard, bearing the stamp of the Nord Prefecture and a revenue stamp (sheet frayed with a small tear in one corner, slight foxing along the margins). It authorizes Mr. Gaston Bourlet, residing in Roubaix, to use a dog as a draft animal exclusively for the transport of foodstuffs. - Brochure from the SPA: Société Protectrice des Animaux (Society for the Protection of Animals). Loire-Inférieure branch. Dog Teams—Decree (Nantes, Imprimerie Commerciale H. Gendron, 1911). In-16 brochure, 12 pp., stapled, brown paper cover printed in black (minor stains on the back cover). This brochure reproduces the prefectural decree of November 10, 1910, signed by Prefect V. Rault, regulating and governing the use of draft dogs. - An old illustrated postcard, published by Baudoin in Arches (Maubré print) and titled “Robin in Pouxeux (Vosges),” addressed to Mademoiselle Marie Delcamp (minor foxing, slight black mark on the front). View depicting a working dog team transporting mail or newspapers (Le Petit Journal), with postage (10c “République” stamp) and postmarks on the back (Pouxeux / Châtel-sur-Moselle). Long used in rural and working-class communities in northern and eastern France for peddling, delivering bread, milk, or goods by small-scale trades, dog-drawn teams were the subject of heated debates in the early 20th century. Under pressure from animal welfare organizations such as the SPA (which increased the number of restrictive prefectural decrees starting in the 1910s), the practice was very strictly regulated, heavily taxed, and ultimately banned or restricted to very specific exceptions before disappearing entirely in the mid-20th century. In fine condition.
