BERTHOUD, Samuel-Henry. Supernatural Chronicles and Traditions of Flanders. Paris, Werdet and the Widow of Charles-Béchet, 1831. In-8, brown glossy half-calf, spine with broad faux ribs filleted in gold and cold-stamped, romantic decoration of cold-stamped fleurons between the ribs, title in gold lettering, marbled edges (contemporary binding). 395 pp. and 1 f. (table of contents), an engraved title vignette by Porret after Tony Johannot. Scuffs, worn caps, a small loss at the top of the front cover, some foxing. First edition of this Romantic masterpiece by Samuel-Henry Berthoud (1804–1891), a collection of 23 fantastical short stories inspired by the myths, superstitions, tales of witchcraft, and diabolical stories of Flemish folklore. It is illustrated with a beautiful woodcut vignette by Porret, based on a design by Tony Johannot, depicting the first story in the collection, “The Devil’s Game of Chess.” A fine copy in a romantic binding of the period.
