[COPPER]. Copper plate. Portrait of Count Godefroy de Montgr - Lot 118
[COPPER]. Copper plate. Portrait of Count Godefroy de Montgrand. Large copper plate signed T. Vabre, mounted on a piece of wood (100 x 150 mm), with an intaglio stamp in the wood (electrotyping, A. Fery, 18 rue Suger). Minimal traces of oxidation along the edge of the copper. Superb copper matrix depicting a frontal bust portrait of “Count Godefroy de Montgrand de la Napoule, Provençal gentleman,” set within an oval medallion framed by drapery. The upper right corner is adorned with his coat of arms bearing the motto “espérance” (azure, a mountain of six peaks surrounded by clouds. Supported by two crowned eagles, a count’s crown, all on a cloud). The lower right corner features bibliophilic attributes: bound books and a quill dipped in an inkwell. This portrait is preserved as a print at the Municipal Archives of Marseille, accompanied by a eulogistic poem written by Hippolyte Matabon. Godefroy, Count of Montgrand de La Napoule (1822–1897), an eminent historian, heraldist, and man of letters from Marseille, is the author of seminal works on the Provençal nobility and genealogy. In excellent condition.
